HOMEOWNER PLANNING GUIDE

Moving or Replacing a Gas Appliance During a Renovation

Plan the gas, electrical, venting and finishing work before ordering a replacement appliance.

Start with a project brief

List the appliance being removed, the proposed replacement model, its intended location and the renovation schedule. Keep the old and new installation manuals available for the contractor. A similar cabinet opening does not establish that the gas connection or venting can be reused.

Coordinate the trades before demolition

Ask the gas contractor to identify any work affecting supply, venting and service access. Assign responsibility for electrical changes, cabinet alterations, wall openings and patching. Have the contractor confirm when an appliance must be disconnected so other trades can work without disturbing a live connection.

Check before closing walls

Agree on the necessary checks and completion records before finishes cover the work. Put permit responsibility, disposal and any return visit in the quote. Keep written approval of changes to the original scope. Do not disconnect or reconnect gas equipment as a demolition shortcut.
