HOMEOWNER PLANNING GUIDE
Gas Appliance Venting Before Renovating
Include existing vents, proposed exhaust fans and exterior alterations in your renovation brief.
Show the whole renovation
Tell the contractor about new windows, insulation, exhaust fans, cabinetry and changes around the appliance. Provide drawings and the model information for any replacement equipment. A vent route that looks convenient is not proof that it suits the appliance.
Assign the venting review
Have a qualified professional assess the appliance and its venting together. Ask who will check compatibility, access and the proposed termination location. Include neighbouring openings, planned decks and exterior finishes in that discussion. Do not box in, extend, relocate or substitute vent components yourself.
Document the approved arrangement
Request a written description of the selected system and the work included in the quote. Coordinate any exterior openings and weatherproofing with the responsible trade. Keep the appliance manual and completion documents for future renovations, and ask what the homeowner should watch for without dismantling equipment.
