Carbon Monoxide Alarms and Gas Appliances
Choose, maintain and respond to carbon monoxide alarms using Canadian safety guidance.
If an alarm sounds
Leave immediately for fresh air. Once outside, call 911 or local emergency services. Do not search for the source or return until professionals say it is safe.
Choose and place alarms carefully
Carbon monoxide has no smell or colour. A smoke-only alarm does not detect it. Health Canada recommends a CO alarm with battery backup, especially outside sleeping areas. Look for Canadian certification and follow the manufacturer's placement instructions and applicable local requirements.
Keep a simple maintenance record
Record each alarm's location, installation date and replacement date. Test it and replace batteries according to its instructions. Arrange professional appliance maintenance; an alarm does not replace servicing. Keep the emergency plan somewhere household members and guests can find. Ask your local fire department when you need help selecting or placing alarms.
